NMARES History: North Mason Amateur Radio Emergency Service (NMARES) club was organized in April of 1994 with six members present. The first president was Chet Landaker, KB7UFT. Originally The meetings were held on Saturday mornings. Meetings were changed to meet twice a month on the second and fourth Thursdays, and finally to once a month on the fourth Thursday. Currently, the meetings are being held at the LDS Church on Victor Cutoff Road, Belfair, Washington at 7 PM. We have training topics and special speakers at most of our meetings so that we can become more proficient in our service efforts.
NMARES Activities: Club members have provided communication services each year beginning with July 1994 to assist parade personnel and the sheriff's department with the Tahuya Days Parade. In 1997, we also worked with the Grapeview Days Parade personnel and sheriff's department for their parade and have been invited back to assist in 1998. We have held ARRL Field Day since 1994 and are experiencing steady growth and attendance. We sponsored a booth at the Midsummer fest in Belfair in 1994. We held our first Hamfest and Swapmeet in March 1997 and it was a great success. Our club members are very responsive to call outs by the Department of Emergency Services (DEM) for Mason County and have provided many hours of support communication service, i.e. search and rescue, fire fighting, HAZMAT surveys and training sessions. Club members have also provided support for several fire departments with the installation of antennas for greater support during emergencies. Some of our members are also involved with teaching ham radio classes and are having good success. We also have a rag chewing session with refreshments at the conclusion of each monthly meeting. Our December meeting is a special no-host dinner and each year has been very well attended and a good time has been had by all. Dues are $15/year (June 1st - May 30) and include all hams in the family.
