The Thurston County Search And Rescue (SAR) Council is composed of various volunteer organizations specializing in SAR related operations. The SAR Council is under the supervision of the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office and uses the Incident Command System during events. The primary mission of SAR is to establish a system to search for, rescue, or recover, by means of ground, air, or marine activity, any person who is lost, injured, or killed while in the out of doors, including those incidents involving bodies of water, within the boundaries of Thurston County.

Thurston County RACES members are certified under RCW 114.040 for SAR operations. They respond to call outs and provide back up VHF/UHF/HF voice and data communications in urban or field environments for SAR coordinators and units at the County Communications Van, DEM EOC, field unit command posts, relay sites and other designated areas. For more detailed information, check the unit SOP on this web site www.thurstoncountysar.org.
