Thurston County Emergency Management Department (DEM) responsibilities extend to unincorporated Thurston County. The DEM's mission is to save lives, prevent injury and protect property and the environment by taking reasonable and affordable measures to mitigate against, prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters. Its principle activity is to prepare County government, the first response community, and the public to respond to and recover from disasters. Their work encompasses all aspects of modern, all-hazard emergency management: mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery. The division does not directly manage every component, but does make sure that EM needs are considered, and relevant activities coordinated, where appropriate and as needed.
